Linde Puerto Rico recently served as the main sponsor of the SkillsUSA welding competition at the Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez in Bayamón. A young student welder, who competed in the local welding competition, is headed to the finals of the SkillsUSA championships.
SkillsUSA is a non-profit partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to help students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. The 49th SkillsUSA Championships will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 24-28, 2013.
Linde Puerto Rico has been the principal sponsor of the welding skills competition for 15 years. Nine students, including three females, competed in different regions of the island. In addition to a written examination, competitors had to demonstrate their skill in MIG, TIG, stick, plasma and oxy cut welding. Safety was part of the evaluation; competitors’ personal protective equipment was a mandatory part of the dress code. The Miller Electric Company, also a supporter of the competition, supplied all the equipment for the competition and presented each participant with protective products.
The winner of the competition is Emmanuel García, who attends Teodoro Aguilar Mora school in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Lisandra Gutiérrez, communications specialist and a member of the Committee for Vocational Schools in Puerto Rico, said, “We congratulate Emmanuel for displaying excellent skills in the competition and we wish him luck at the finals. Linde Puerto Rico is committed to the next generation of welders. We wanted to emphasize safety, as well a proper welding techniques, and we think this competition achieved both objectives.”
